A woman in coma gave birth to her baby
A woman in 22 weeks coma gave birth to a healthy baby in a university clinic in Bavaria (southern Germany), a world first case recorded by scientists.
The 40-year-old patient had suffered a heart attack followed by a cardiovascular collapse. She was then revived and transferred into a coma at the gynecological ward of the Erlangen University Hospital since she was in the 13th week of pregnancy at the time of the attack.
The doctors do not specify whether the persistent vegetative state (point where the patient is still responding to certain stimuli) of patient is reversible or not.
"The doctors and the medical team were able, with the support of relatives, to prolong pregnancy for 22 weeks, until the birth of a healthy child", said the statement posted on the website of the clinic.
No similar case, in which doctors were able to bring a brain-dead or a comatose patient vigil until delivery has been known in the world.
