Chlorine is a strong irritant to those who have eczema. And also is potentially dangerous for those who do not have eczema, but the skin is very sensitive. Several studies have shown that chlorine used in swimming pools can increase the risk of asthma in children up to 6 times.

Hay fever and other allergies can also be triggered by chlorine. Scientists believe that the combined substances in the air, such as chlorine from the pool and the compounds contained in detergents, can cause a 5-fold increase in cases of allergies compared with the period of 50 years ago.

Exposure to these chemicals can alter the immune system of the unborn child and make it more sensitive to such conditions such as eczema, asthma and hay fever. Infants are at highest risk of asthma, because their lungs are still in the process of development. Children at this age also tend to drink water while swimming, so harmful substances enter the body not only by breathing but also directly into the digestive organs.

A study of 50 athletes found that almost all swimmers have inflammation of the lung tissue. Those who spend most of their time in the pool, have a strong inflammation.

Chlorine used to disinfect swimming pools, connecting with the waste products of a swimmer with his bacteria, urine, sweat and grease form compounds known as chloramines. Chloramines but not chlorine itself are responsible for eye irritation and nose, skin problems. Ozone can be injected in a pool. It reacts with contaminants, and thus they do not communicate with chlorine and chloramines are not formed.

Also, contaminants may be removed during the normal process of filtration of water without the formation of irritating substances. This method of water treatment is very effective, as it doesn't form substances that irritate the skin.
