Eating strawberries would prevent ulcers
Ppeople with ulcers in the stomach should consume fresh strawberries, especially if inflammation from excessive consumption of alcohol, according to a study published in the American journal PLoS One (Public Library of Science).
This study has shown that the antioxidant properties in strawberries could act as a protective barrier against stomach ulcers.
In their study, a team of Italian, Serbian and Spanish scientists have fed a group of rats with gastric disorders with extracts of strawberries with alcohol for ten days. The other group of rats received alcohol, but without the consumption of strawberries.
The rats who consumed fruit extracts showed less ulcerations, approximately 40 mg per day and per kilo, compared to rats that ate strawberries.
Researchers have discovered that the antioxidants present in strawberries help not only the wall of the stomach, but also activate defenses and enzymes in the body. Strawberry consumption can also reduce disorders and inflammation.
These new discoveries could develop new treatments against the ulcers.
This disorder can be caused by alcohol consumption, viral infections, or certain drugs like aspirin.
Researchers have however held to clarify that their study was not conducted to minimize the effects of alcohol, but to discover new ways to protect the stomach.
Previous studies had already shown that strawberries could strengthen the response of red blood cells to stress oxidant, often a precursor of cancers and other chronic diseases.
