Sleep happens naturally. It's a sign of a healthy body. Sleep accentuates the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems.  Unfortunately over forty million people suffer from sleep disorders and in most cases it is ignored. Lack of quality sleep leads to tiredness and weakness, which in turn affects concentration, remembering things, and delayed recovery time during illness.

Duration Of Sleep

Daily an average healthy person should get atleast seven to eight hours of sleep. The duration varies from person to person. Even after seven to eight hours of sleep if the person is still finding difficulties in focusing and staying alert, then he need to increase his sleeping time. During illness more hours of sleep is required for the body to recovery quickly. Same is the case with pregnant women; they need sound sleep for more hours for the healthy growth of the baby.

Health Disorders

When it comes to illness, there are plenty of them that lead to various sleep disorders. Some of which are irregular sleep patterns, sleep walking, nightmares, snoring, insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy.

Being one of the common sleeping disorders, insomnia is not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. It is a symptom or a sign of something else. People who suffer from insomnia have problem in falling asleep. Some wakes up too early and feels drowsy. This could be due to medical reasons; environmental challenges like a noisy neighborhood; psychiatric problems like anxiety, depression etc; some habits like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol etc; due to pain or illness; or simply because of irregular bedtime habit. Insomnia can be of different types. Some lasts for less than a week whereas some causes inability to consistently sleep well for a period of less than a month. There is a third type which last longer than a month.

Easily Solvable Cases

Some of these reasons can be easily attended to. Fixing a convenient bedtime could take care of irregular schedule. Also make it a point to do something to make you feel tired just before going to bed. Find out some relaxing activities that are suitable for you and indulge in them until you feel sleepy. Make sure you don’t go for a rigorous exercise or smoke tobaccos before bedtime as both these are sleep stealers. Make yourself comfortable with a ‘just enough’ food at night as a heavy tummy is a bad companion at bed. Also avoid beverages that contain too much caffeine during late evenings.

Exercise could be an ideal solution for most people to overcome sleeplessness. It can do magic as it has diverse implications to one’s body. Exercise helps in correcting ones health conditions and in establishing a healthy body-mind harmony. With all these changes in the body, sleep is sure to happen naturally. But watch out to sustain a regular exercise pattern and an ideal time which should be say six to seven hours before bedtime.

If none of the above mentions tips are helping you, then don’t waste your time. You must meet a doctor to pick out the right cause for your sleeping disorder.
