The first permanent artificial heart implanted
A permanent artificial heart was implanted for the first time ever on a 15 year old man at the hospital the Infant Jesus of Rome, reported Saturday the Italian agency Ansa.
The surgery, which lasted ten hours, was performed Thursday by the cardiac team at the hospital, led by Antonio Amodeo.
The main novelty lies in the fact that its location is not temporary, as is usual, but permanent.
According to experts, the temporary artificial heart is usually used to help patients awaiting a compatible heart transplant. This time, the Romans preferred cardiologists implant a permanent artificial heart.
The artificial heart used, with a length of four inches, was inserted into the left ventricle of the patient. It is an electrically activated hydraulic pump that was fully implemented in the chest to avoid the risk of infection.
The power of the device is done through a card placed behind the left ear of the young, which is connected to the battery that the patient wears around the waist.
So far, this type of intervention had been performed only on adults. The peculiarity of the intervention is the minimally invasive device and methods that reduces risk of infection.
According to the medical team, the young man had a disease that prevented him from being placed on the waiting list for a transplant, hence the choice of a "permanent" solution.
