Plants that are good
Catharanthus roseus. Against leukemia, lung, breast, bladder.
This small delicate flower from Madagascar is home to a myriad of molecules, including vinblastine used to treat leukemia and vincristine for treating Hodgkin's disease. In 1972, the team of Professor Pierre Potier, Institute of Chemistry of Natural CNRS, developed a method of synthesis of these molecules and thus obtain vinorelbine, which treats lung cancer and cancers of the breast.
More recently, researchers at the University of Poitiers were able to synthesize another molecule, vinflunine, a new treatment against cancer of the bladder. The Madagascar periwinkle can only be used as is, its antitumor properties accompanied by high toxicity. The coquette is however the joy of gardening by its ability to bloom as soon as she finds a place in the sun.
The foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). Against cardiovascular disease.
Nicknamed glove Notre Dame, shepherdess or stall, this majestic plant that adorns our gardens, owes its name to the finger glove pink flowers purple. Several molecules have been isolated from the leaves to treat cardiovascular disorders including digoxin, which is a regulator of cardiac function. Drugs based on digital are available only by prescription. Beauty is to be taken when wearing gloves. For high doses, this is a cardiotonic cardiotoxic causing eyestrain. Researchers hypothesized that a digitalis intoxication may cause visual distortion suffered by Vincent Van Gogh at the end of his life. For evidence, they suggest that digitalis is on the famous Portrait of Dr. Paul Gachet.
Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Against Pain.
It is said that nepenthe Helen poured into the wine Telemachus to soothe her grief would be the juice of poppies. The poppy is now a sulphurous reputation. This overlooks the benefits of this beautiful flower anesthetics, very useful in the treatment against pain. The pharmaceutical industry uses different alkaloids, including morphine, analgesic, and codeine, antitussive.
