Multiple sclerosis: the benefits of exercise
According to a study by researchers at the University of Illinois and the University of Massachusetts, patients with multiple sclerosis practicing fitness or aerobics would better test scores of cognitive performance that patients who do no physical activity.
The study also reveals that parts of the brain damaged by multiple sclerosis were less deteriorated in patients who were conducting fitness sessions.
"We have noticed that the fitness and aerobics had a protective effect on the parts of the brain most affected by multiple sclerosis. Patients who practice fitness have smaller lesions than patients who do not exercise," says Ruchika Shaurya Prakash, principal author of the study.
Finally, the study reports that patients with multiple sclerosis who engage in fitness has a greater volume of gray matter than other patients.
