Fighting the stress with knitting needles
Since 2005, an American physiotherapist works with many researchers from different universities to explore the effects of knitting on health.
They found that repetitive needlework, such as knitting or crocheting have an immeasurable positive effects on health.
The knitting:
-lowers stress
-makes chronic pain more tolerable
-strengthens immune defences
Monica Baird, a pain specialist, explains that knitting alter brain chemistry, lowering the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, while boosting production of dopamine and serotonin, the molecules of well-being.
Other doctors suggest that the repeated gestures of knitting activates the same brain areas as in meditation or yoga... and knitting has the same effects on pain and depression.
Dr. Bendon, from the Medical School of Harvard says, that knitting is a way to put the body in relaxation mode, which lowers blood pressure and heart rate, and can therefore help to cope with stress and anxiety more easily, and even to limit asthma attacks!
