Osteoarthritis: Tai Chi is good for morale and knees
Tai Chi (Tai Chi Chuan) is the famous gymnastics practiced for centuries in China.
This martial art - which has the biggest number of followers in the world - was invented by a monk who witnessed a fight between a bird and a snake.Hence the mix of gestures and postures, which refers to both a slow dance and a fight in slow motion.
Virtues of Tai Chi are numerous including increased awareness of the body and its own limitations, and also improved mobility of the knee.
Tai Chi Chuan is well-known, well outside the borders of China. The workouts gently strengthen the body. But interest mainly concerns the "mental" work of breathing and relaxation. And the effect is stronger when movements are performed outdoors. Thus, Tai Chi would act as a shield against mental pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee, freeing the mind and body!
A new study has just proven that this discipline, practiced for two 60 minute sessions per week, significantly reduces pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee in the elderly.
It was conducted in Boston (United States) by researchers from Tufts University School of Medicine. And its authors say that regular Tai Chi practice could replace the traditional "analgesics and stretching" often prescribed for these patients.
