Migraine and alcohol, do they mix?
According to a study presented at Neuroscience 2009, The Society for Neuroscience annual meeting, held in Chicago, USA, from October 17 to 21, people with migraine are more likely to suffer from hangovers than average.
Dr. Michael Oshinsky from Thomas Jefferson University, has studied a rat model with artificially triggered headaches by stimulating part of its brain.
He used this rat model to study the effects of alcohol on rats with migraine, comparing them to rats that did not suffer from headaches.
For this, he and his team analyzed four groups of rats. The first two groups received stimulation to the brain to mimic the effects of migraine associated with ingestion of the equivalent of two glasses alcohol. Two other groups received the same dose of alcohol, without receiving stimulation reproducing the effects of migraine.
The rats that received brain stimulation no longer felt pain within two hours after ingestion of alcohol. However, four to six hours later, the pain increased.
The pain associated with alcohol did not increase among other groups.
"Our results suggest that dehydration or impurities in alcohol are not responsible for the type of pain hangover," Dr. Michael Oshinsky said. These data confirm the clinical observation that migraine sufferers are more susceptible than average to headaches related to alcohol.
