No alcohol during pregnancy!
What the mother drinks goes directly to the fetus, constantly repeating the specialists. Clearly, the alcohol passes easily the placenta and all barriers that protect the brain of unborn children. With devastating effects.
Primary victim: the brain. Alcohol can disrupt the brain at all stages of its developmen. Multiplication, migration and cell survival, development of the synapses are all at risk. Ethanol is a toxic substance that passes throughout the brain. So, there is no "right" time to drink during pregnancy.
"The level of toxicity varies from woman to woman, " said the specialists. The only prevention message clear and universal is the famous "zero alcohol during pregnancy". Excluding pathological alcoholism, it is often mundane alcoholism, and lack of awareness about the risks involved.
Serious consequences, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is well known now. Growth retardation and dysmorphism (abnormal face and head) accompanied by nervous disorders, which result mostly in mental retardation. Partial FAS is also problematic: the physical signs are absent, preventing early diagnosis, but the neurological consequences, however, are well represented!
The incidence of this dreaded syndrome is estimated at one to three cases per 1,000 births in developed countries.
