Do you often eat at a fast food restaurant? Do you grab quick snacks? Do you eat late at night? Do you like to drink fizzy beverages? If your answer is “yes”, your eating habits should be changed and you should be more health-conscious.

The fact is that in today’s fast-moving world our eating habits have changed to worse and people started eating a lot of junk food. Why? It is probably lack of time and loss of tradition. Nowadays, people are too busy to cook and eat proper meals, so they grab whatever is available and that is usually junk food. Also, the style of life, represented on TV, especially in music videos, is fast. Young people pick up the idea that speed means excitement, whereas anything traditional is slow and boring. As a result, they turn down traditional food and go for a junk food instead.

But this kind of food is high in calories and lacking in nutrition. Hamburgers, crisps, chocolate bars, hot dogs and pizzas are high in saturated fat. And this type of fat is associated with a great risk of cancer. Apart from the risk of cancer, another side effect of junk food is that you are likely to gain weight. You tend to eat more, as junk food is less satisfying and lower in vital nutrients than healthy food. You should bear in mind that weight gained in adolescence, is extremely hard to loose in later life. The best advice for those who cannot live without hamburgers or chocolate bars, is to limit the amount of junk food they eat. A little now and then will probably do no harm.

Another alarming thing about people’s lifestyle today is that while the amount of junk food we eat has increased, the amount of exercise we do has decreased. It is not a secret, that exercise plays an important part in keeping the body fit and healthy.

Even though, people nowadays are actually far more aware of the importance of exercise and a healthy diet, a new coach-potato lifestyle is surprisingly popular. The new generation will be much more likely to suffer from heart and liver disease, diabetes and obesity; although they realize that a balanced diet and regular exercise bring significant health benefits. Ironically, if people were to make time to exercise and improve their eating habits, they would probably find, that they were far better equipped to deal with their stressful lifestyles, than they are now.

Nowadays, people are more health-conscious than they used to be some years ago. Keeping fit and staying healthy have become fashionable. Remember, “ You are what you eat”. That is why, if you want to be slim, healthy, energetic and able to cope with everyday problems successfully, follow some simple rules:

  • Play sports and do exercise;
  • Keep to a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables;
  • Eat a good breakfast to start the day well;
  • Don’t eat late at night;
  • Avoid junk food.
