Messages about the effects of alcohol on health are relatively contradictory. The only certainty is that excessive drinking increases the risk of traffic accidents, cirrhosis, cancer, neurological disorders, social outcasts etc.

For low doses, the debate rages between those who think that the beneficial effects predominate and those who are more circumspect. In this context, the survey published this week in the journal PLoS Medicine offers some clear answers, for a glass of wine a day, at least for women.

15 grams of alcohol per day

The researchers were interested in the US Nurses Health Study, launched in 1976 on 121,000 women volunteered to participate in an extensive study to correlate the lifestyle with health. These nurses, middle-aged (between 40 and 50) at the time of inclusion, have agreed, among other things, the time to clarify their daily alcohol consumption. Scientists have therefore examined thirty years later, in 2006, the health of these women then aged over 70 years.

Results: those who consumed a daily drink of alcohol (wine, beer or about the equivalent of 15 grams of alcohol) were more physically fit than those who were completely abstinent, and even those who drank only occasionally. The authors conclude therefore that regular but modest consumption is associated with better health status of women as they age.
