Diabetes: Avandia supervised

Doctors are advised not to prescribe rosiglitazone for patients with heart failure or acute coronary syndrome

The Avandia or Avandamet, also known as rosiglitazone, are drugs prescribed in the case of type 2 diabetes in people (particularly overweight) who are inadequately controlled by diet and exercise and for whom metformin is inappropriate because of cons-indications or intolerance.

European doctors are advised by the European Medicines Agency not to prescribe rosiglitazone for patients with heart failure or acute coronary syndrome. In addition, the agency said that the rosiglitazone and insulin should be taken together in exceptional cases and under close supervision.

Why such an oversight?

The U.S. expert committee had revealed that rosiglitazone promoted cardiac risk "with an excess mortality from heart attack and stroke," and asked the Administration U.S. Food and Drug withdrawing treatment from the market or impose requirements precautions.

For its part, the European Medicines Agency will, in September, do a new risk-benefit assessment of the drug. And meanwhile, called European doctors to follow strictly the recommendations contained in the record of anti-diabetes.
