Eating walnuts, hazelnuts and other nuts in limited quantities, could reduce the risk of heart disease
Eating walnuts, hazelnuts and other nuts in limited quantities, could reduce the risk of heart disease

According to an article published in the Mayo Clinic Women's HealthSource, most of these dried nuts contain nutrients that may improve heart health and help control cholesterol.

These nuts, hazelnuts and pistachios contain especially unsaturated omega-3 fats and fiber. They could also reduce the "bad" cholesterol, low density lipoprotein.

Eating this type of dried fruit would also reduce the risk of developing blood clots, and improve the health of arteries.

All these indications suggest that eating walnuts, hazelnuts and other nuts in limited quantities, could reduce the risk of heart disease, although no study has demonstrated this fact scientifically.

Almost all types of dried fruit is nutritious and have lots of calories. Experts recommend eating in moderation, no more than a handful per day.

About 30 grams of almonds contain 169 calories and 15 grams of fat for example. The calories and fat content of other types of nuts are roughly comparable.

Experts recommend choosing unsalted low fat nuts. They also advise eating nuts, hazelnuts and almonds as a substitute for saturated fat found in meat, eggs and dairy products.
