Eating fast leads to overeating
Eating quickly reduces the production of satiety hormones.
According to a study to be published in the January issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, decreased production of such hormones would tend to overeat.
The speed at which we eat has an impact on the gut hormones related to satiety, which give signals to the brain that it must stop eating.
Patients who participated in the study consumed the same test meal, 300 ml of ice at different speeds. The researchers took samples of glucose, insulin and hormones located in the intestine before the meal and every half hour from the beginning of the meal for 3,5 hours.
People who took thirty minutes to finish the ice had the average level of gut hormones peptide, a hormones secreted by the intestine. They also felt more sated than those who ate more quickly.
