The world enters the post-pandemic, said Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). The H1N1 virus has almost ceased to rage, but this does not mean it has completely disappeared. This is the opinion of members of the Emergency Committee, met Tuesday morning by teleconference. It should adopt "the behavior of a seasonal influenza virus," she warned.

The decision to bring the pandemic to the status of influenza was made after consulting members of the emergency committee which based its assessment on the review of the world situation and reports of several countries currently face the flu. "I fully support the Committee's view," said Mrs. Chan.

Recalling the "unpredictable" character of the pandemic, the WHO Director-General said that "this time, we were very lucky." She therefore urged to maintain vigilance. The WHO has published guidance in this direction and recommendations for surveillance, vaccination and clinical management during the post-pandemic period.
