Leukodystrophy: Take on your sneakers and beat the disease
leukodystrophy is a genetic disease that destroys the nerve sheath (myelin) of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). When this sheath is damaged, the current is blocked and the nerve impulses are interrupted.
Loss of movement and balance, loss of vision and hearing, loss of speech and memory: leukodystrophy paralyze all vital functions.
Each week 20 to 40 children in Europe born with this terrible disease.
Often the first symptoms appear at the school and the teacher is warning parents about the change in the child's behavior.
Sponsored by Zinedine Zidane, the European Association against leukodystrophy (ELA), established in 1992, is comprised of parents, patients and families determined to overcome this genetic disease.
ELA major goal is to fight the disease, fund medical research and support families. Since its inception, ELA has funded over 180 medical research programs for a total of 13.4 million euros. Help medical research is a priority.
