An ultra-resistant to antibiotics bacteria threatens to spread

Researchers have isolated the enterobacteria in 37 patients hospitalized in institutions in the United Kingdom, after undergoing plastic surgery in India or Pakistan. The NDM-1 resistant to virtually all types of antibiotics, including carbapenems, usually reserved for emergencies and the treatment of multi-resistant infections.

"The NDM-1 could become a public health problem worldwide and coordinated surveillance is needed," warned the authors of the article, noting that "India offers cosmetic surgery to other Europeans and Americans, it is likely that the NDM-1 can spread throughout the world."

Researchers indicate that the NDM-1 has been isolated in the United States, the Netherlands, Australia and Canada, in patients who had gone to seek treatment in India.
