While the last production of Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" is out on the screen, the American Veterinary Medical Association urged the American public not to "kiss frogs", because the amphibians are known to be carriers of salmonella.

"Frogs, like all amphibians and reptiles can be a source of Salmonella infection in humans," warns the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in a statement.

"We remind the public that improper handling of a frog, such as kissing, can give a serious illness, rather than a prince," says the association.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported recently that in 2009 frogs had been the source of 48 cases of salmonella infections in 25 U.S. states.

Salmonella is a bacteria causing severe intestinal infections in humans, called salmonellosis, and are usually transmitted by consuming food contaminated with animal feces.
