Swine fever hits the north of Russia
African swine fever, a disease fatal to pigs but not transmissible to humans, has reached 2000 kilometers from south to north-west Russia, announced the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), that gives a reason for concern about an "incursion of virus into the EU" .
"The Baltic republics and the Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria are directly threatened," said J. Lubroth Chief Veterinary Officer of FAO.
"This means the risk of possible incursion of the virus in the EU and expansion across Russia, heading east toward Siberia and perhaps eventually to China," he added.
The latest case was discovered October 20 near the city of St.Petersburg, confirming the worst fears of FAO experts who track the virus in Georgia and neighboring countries for several years.
Currently, no vaccine against this disease exists.
