Turmeric and pepper could fight breast cancer
Turmeric and pepper have been studied for many years as potential treatments against cancer, but this new study suggests for the first time that these spices could prevent cancer by specifically targeting stem cells.
The cancer can come back and grow as conventional chemotherapies do not eliminate the cancer stem cells. Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have found that when curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric, and piperine, derived from black pepper are added to cell culture, the number of stem cells is reduced while normal cells are spared.
Researchers believe that the elimination of cancer stem cells is essential in the fight against cancer.
The piperine enhances the effects of curcumin, and the two halt the process of renewing cancer stem cells.
"This shows that these compounds are not toxic to normal breast tissue," said Madhuri Kakarala, author of the study. "Women who are at high risk of breast cancer can now choose to undergo preventive treatment with tamoxifen or raloxifene, but most women do not take these drugs because they are too toxic. The idea that dietary components may help is seductive, and curcumin and piperine seem to have very low toxicity. "
Both compounds are still studied for their possible role in cancer treatment, the researchers note that one should not add more pepper or curcumin in the diet.
Curcumin is known for many other health benefits, particularly in Asian medicine. It is used to treat gastrointestinal problems and arthritis and is also a powerful antioxidant.
The piperine has anti-inflammatory qualities and is known to be able to improve digestion. It is often used in slimming diets. The piperine also improves the absorption of nutrients when incorporated into other foods.
