England: 10,000 deaths each year due to late diagnosis of cancer
Up to 10,000 people die from cancer every year in England because of late diagnosis, a top government health official said on Monday.
5,000 to 10,000 lives could be saved if the disease was detected earlier," said Professor Mike Richards, who regretted "unacceptable" quality of diagnosis at present.
The "typically British" attitude of not complaining to the doctor of any health problems is also contributing to the problem.
Efforts must now include "to promote a rapid diagnosis" of patients, saidProfessor Richards.
According to official statistics, lung cancer was the deadliest in Britain in 2007 with 34,589 deaths, colon cancer (16,087) and breast cancer (12,082).
