A new technique of breast reconstruction after mastectomy
Australian researchers announced Thursday they would try a new technique of breast reconstruction for women who underwent mastectomy after cancer.
Doctors at the Bernard O'Brien Institute of Microsurgery in Melbournehave claimed to have developed an implantable device that should allow reconstruction of the breast from fat cells.
"The equivalent of a spoonful of fat is placed in the device. Fueled by blood, fat will develop quite normal for the patient," said Dr Phillip Marzella, who directs the work.
Similar in shape to a cup bra, the device is intended to eventually fill with grease, also explained the doctor. An operation is then necessary to extract the device. The device will be tested clinically in early 2010.
"Of course the work has been done using stem cells, but it is something completely different, which uses the bloodstream of patients," Dr. Marzella. added.
