The Brazilian authorities will distribute 59 million free condoms during Carnival, as part of a campaign against AIDS targeting young women and homosexuals, the main victims of the pandemic.

"Most infected between 13 and 19 are women, and the main form of transmission among men 13 to 24 years is homosexual relations," said a ministry statement, which had been distributing condoms at the festival's most popular countries.

The most famous carnival in Brazil, a country of about 190 million people, is held in Rio, where the twelve main samba schools parade on February 14 and 15 on the Avenue marks Sapucai at Sambodrome.

630,000 is an approximate number of people infected by AIDS in Brazil. The average number of new cases is 35,384, according to official figures, a stable number for eight years.
