Dirty towels are one of the biggest culprits of the spread of germs in houses, researchers say.

There are two reasons of it: firstly, a towel retains moisture for a long time, which promotes the survival of the bacteria; secondly, the towels are used in those areas of the house where have most bacteria.

Studies conducted by researchers from the University of Arizona showed that coliforms are in 89% of towels in the kitchen, and Escherichia coli - in 25.6% of towels. Coliform bacteria are commonly found in the feces and can cause poisoning and diarrhea.

According to scientists,  towels can be contaminated with bacteria when they are used for wiping hands and surfaces that can, for example, come into contact with raw meat.

"Man, wiping his hands in the bathroom, for example, can 'settle'  bacteria in the towel, which will be distributed among the members of the family, using the same towel," - says Charles Herb, author of the study.

Professor Anthony Hilton of Aston University warned that the towel washing at a low temperature does not always kill bacteria and advises washing at higher temperatures.
