A recent study showed that the largest number of harmful chemicals is found in apples and celery.

Apples are most contaminated with pesticides among all fruits and vegetables that you buy. Not far from them are celery and pepper. The purest products on the list are onions, pineapple and corn, according to the EWG (Environmental Working Group), which recently published another study on the content of pesticides and other chemicals in products.

Researchers say they found a "substantial amount of pesticide residues", including chemicals banned for use in agriculture.

In their list of organophosphates (that may cause problems in the nervous system), were found also in baby foods.

Scientists, taking into account their past research, compiled a list of the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables, but in the current report at this time, the list includes more than 15 products.

The top of the list of the most contaminated products belongs to apples. Then go celery, peppers, peaches, strawberries, nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce and cucumbers.

List of the cleanest fruits and vegetables consists of onions, corn, pineapples, avocados, cabbage, peas, asparagus, mango, kiwi and eggplant.

Some lobbyists of large agricultural companies claim that EWG distorts data and that fruits and vegetables should be washed before eating, thus getting rid of pesticide residues. But many experts agree that washing fruits and vegetables in most cases is hardly enough.
