What makes us beautiful?

lot of people nowadays are sure that a courageous spirit and a generous heart make us beautiful. Anyway, so many people, so many minds.

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Chances are you’ve got a feature or two that could be improved – after all, nobody’s perfect. Some people suppose that face makes a person beautiful, some others think that it’s our body which makes us beautiful. A lot of people nowadays are sure that a courageous spirit and a generous heart make us beautiful. Anyway, so many people, so many minds.

First of all, I should say that for centuries people have tried to come up with a mathematical formula for beauty. The ancient Greeks, for example, thought the number three was the answer – a beautiful face was one that could be nodivided into three exactly equal parts, hairline to eyebrows, eyebrows to mouth, and finally mouth to chin. The Victorians believed that a face with great beauty possessed the average features of all other faces. However, this has now been debunked by recent research which found that the most attractive faces have higher cheekbones, a thinner jaw and larger eyes relative to the size of the face than an average one.

Many scientists now come to the question, why all people want to be beautiful? The problem is that every day we are bombarded with beautiful faces. They smile at us from advertising hoardings, TV screens and magazines. Their perfect smiles, flawless cheekbones and wide eyes make us obsessed with our own not so attractive appearance. Many women as men feel pressure from their mates who expect their girlfriends resemble the perfect celebrity – body model they’ve been fed by a looks – obsessed society. This in its turn can lead to a considering of a plastic surgery, that has become a real 21 age tragedy.

I can say, that many people think, that in order to be attractive you must be very thin. It also has become one of the tragedies. Images of female bodies are everywhere. Women—and their body parts—sell everything from food to cars. Popular film and television actresses are becoming younger, taller and thinner. Some have even been known to faint on the set from lack of food. Women’s magazines are full of articles urging that if they can just lose those last twenty pounds, they’ll have it all—the perfect marriage, loving children, great sex, and a rewarding career. Analysts believe, that he roots of this problem , are economic. By presenting an ideal difficult to achieve and maintain, the cosmetic and diet product industries are assured of growth and profits.

Some people are sure that perfect face is the thing, that makes us beautiful. There are three main features that characterize beautiful faces: the geometric feature of bilateral symmetry, the mathematical feature of averageness, and the biological feature of secondary sexual characteristics.

The main idea of Bilateral symmetry is that attractive faces are more symmetrical than unattractive faces. As for Averageness, the main principle of it is that Facial averageness is another feature that increases physical attractiveness; faces with features closer to the population average are more attractive than those with extreme features. And the last is Secondary sexual characteristics, the main idea of which is that unlike the geometric concept of bilateral symmetry and the mathematical concept of averageness, the biological concept of secondary sexual characteristics differs for the sexes.

You beauty also influence people’s attitude to you. Researchers have found that good looking students get higher grades from their teachers than students with an ordinary appearance. Furthermore, attractive patients receive more personalized care from their doctors. Studies have even shown that handsome criminals receive lighter sentences than less attractive convicts. How much money a person earns may also be influenced by physical beauty. One study found that people low in physical attractiveness earn 5 to 10 percent less than ordinary looking people, who in turn earn 3 to 8 percent less than those who are considered good looking. Discrimination against others based on their appearance is known as lookism.

There is another theory that has been already mentioned, in which said, that true beauty comes from within. Inner beauty is a concept used to describe the positive aspects of something that is not physically observable. While most species use physical traits and pheromones to attract mates, some humans claim to rely on the inner beauty of their choices. Qualities including kindness, sensitivity, tenderness or compassion, creativity and intelligence have been said to be desirable since antiquity. However new research comparing what humans claim to find attractive to their actual mating habits underlines the superficiality of "inner beauty," underlining the fact that the human animal relies on physical traits and pheromones just like every other animal to find a mate.

So the message is: if you have got the beauty flaunt it – but if you haven’t just make the most of what you’ve got.

Beauty is such a hard topic to discuss and even harder to define. Personally, I think someone can look beautiful - but that doesnt mean they are beautiful. It goes without saying that physical features can definitely make someone beautiful on the outside. Good bone structure, good skin, healthy shiny hair, white, straight teeth, good coloring, full lips, etc. I think everyone has beautiful qualities and everyone has a quality they dont like. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, and it depends on what people see in your personality that helps determine beauty.

Personally I think beauty is confidence, pride, and will. A true understand of themselves, and anyone that is secure in their own skin (imperfections and all) they are beautiful. Beauty shouldnt be a goal, and shouldnt stop someone from reaching their dreams. Being beautiful is a state of mind, not a way of life. I also think that persons smile defines their beauty. It shines through their eyes and highlights their entire face. It gives a glimpse of what is inside as well as highlights their physical characteristics.
