Rabies kills one person every ten minutes
Rabies kills 55,000 people a year worldwide, an average one person every ten minutes. The victims in the majority of cases are Asian and African children.
To educate and inform so many people of the essential but too often neglected role of prevention in the fight against this dreadfull killer disease, the vaccines division of Sanofi-aventis and the Global Alliance against rabies (Alliance for Rabies Control, ARC) have signed a global partnership agreement.
Over 54 million people from 74 countries already received educational messages in their own language. These messages targeted at those who are most at risk, contributed to reduce mortality.
Children are particularly vulnerable because they are less watchful of dogs than adults and are most often bitten in the face or limbs. "Every year, September 28, the Alliance and its partners are working to further expand the scope and impact of initiatives of the World Day of Rabies," the statement of pharmaceutical group said.
The World Health Organization recommends the establishment of vaccination programs (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for children living in areas where canine rabies is endemic. The pre-exposure vaccination is also recommended for those who are at high risk of exposure to rabies, such as laboratory workers, veterinarians and staff caring for animals, and travelers in endemic areas.
The post-exposure prophylaxis in cases of severe bites requires both active immunization with rabies vaccine and passive immunization in the form of rabies immunoglobulins. During the last twenty years, over 20 million people have been treated in a hundred countries with rabies products of Sanofi Pasteur (vaccines and rabies immunoglobulin).
