Pregnant woman is smoking "for two"
"A small cigarette from time to time can not hurt him... Aanyway, in my belly, the baby is not breathing..." Pregnant smokers have no shortage of arguments to justify why they continue to smoke a cigarette when the urge is too strong. Unfortunately, it is proved that the toxic tobacco actually reach the fetus.
The placenta is "porous". Cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide that enters the bloodstream of the mother, stays there for 4 to 6 hours and manages to get to fetus through the umbilical cord. The problem is that it remains longer in the fetal hemoglobin!
Meanwhile, the red blood cells carry less oxygen. "For every cigarette mother smokes per day, the child weighs 20 to 30 grams less at birth, said Professor Bertrand Dautzenberg, pulmonologist at the Pitie-Salpetriere in Paris. It concerns all the baby's organs, including the brain..."
Nicotine acts on the vascular, less blood reaches the fetus, and its heart rate increases after each cigarette. All other substances cross the placental barrie. Benzo(a)pyrene, for example, which is carcinogenic, and cadmium, which has a half-life of 70 years (after this period, half the intake is still present).
When to stop?
"The toxicity is increased early in the 2nd quarter, but for hormonal reasons, lack of sensation is greater when the woman is pregnant. It is better to stop before, advises Professor Dautzenberg, especially because the smoking also reduces fertility."
As for making nicotine replacement therapy during pregnancy, the renunciation is a way to have a baby of normal weight at birth. The adverse effect of passive smoking, finally, is indisputable. It is therefore an issue to be taken by two, before considering conception.
