Five thousand people die of food poisoning each year in the U.S.
About 5,000 people die each year from food poisoning in the United States and this phenomenon is costing about $ 152 billion per year to the community, according to a report released Thursday.
"The costs associated with illness caused by food are substantial," says Robert Scharff, a former economist at the FDA, author of the report published by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), there are 76 million cases of severe food poisoning each year in the United States. They cause 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths.
The United States has recently experienced several episodes of contamination with salmonella and E. Coli bacteria.
Fruits and vegetables, fresh, canned or frozen, accounts for 19.7 million cases of disease and are alone responsible for 39 billion dollars of economic losses.
In these costs, the report takes into account medical care but also assess the economic loss associated with illness (death, suffering, disability).
