The majority of smokers quit without assistance
The best way to fight against lung cancer is to stop smoking. All kinds of techniques exist, nicotine replacement therapy, medication, cognitive therapy...
This week, the international journal PLoS publishes the results of Australian researchers who analyzed all studies on this issue published in 2007 and 2008. They conclude that there is no miracle.
Between two thirds and three fourths of ex-smokers eventually stop without assistance, by their own volition. The Australian experts deplore even excessive medicalization of smoking cessation, under pressure from firms producing substitutes or medications.
To quit smoking, experts say all it takes a very strong motivation based on certainty that tobacco causes shortness of breath, skin aging, heart problems, cancer etc.
