Abu Dhabi gives 25 million dollars for the fight against malaria
The oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi announced on Wednesday it had donated $ 25 million over five years for a program to fight against malaria, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM).
According to the official news agency WAM, the local government of Abu Dhabi will contribute to the eradication of malaria and the achievement of the UN Millennium Development by 2015.
"We are grateful to Abu Dhabi for this support. It gives a major boost to the RBM Partnership and sends an important signal of encouragement to the world community united against malaria", the Executive Director of RBM, Awa Marie Coll-Seck said, visiting the emirate.
The RBM is a public-private partnership that provides a global framework for coordinated action against malaria, a disease caused by parasites transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
Founded by UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank and United Nations Program for Development, in close cooperation with over 500 partner organizations, the RBM Partnership formulates policy directives, provides financial and technical support to countries, and follows the progress related to the universal goals related to malaria.
According to WHO, near 243 million cases of malaria worldwide have been reported in 2008 with 863,000 deaths. By far the most affected continent is Africa.
