The HIV positive are welcome in the United States again
A 22 years ban is about to end. The United States will take on Monday the latest steps to lift the ban on the AIDS infected from entering their territory and freedom of travel will be restored early 2010, said Friday the U.S. president Barack Obama.
"22 years ago, a decision based on fear rather than facts, the United States have instituted a ban on entering the territory for those who were carrying the AIDS virus. We are talking about removing the stigma of this disease, but this does not prevent us from treating them as a threat who lived with and who visited us," said Obama.
He stressed that there are only a dozen countries around the world with such regulations and that the United States is among them. "If we want to lead the fight against AIDS in the world, we must behave accordingly. That's why my administration will publish on Monday a final regulation that will remove the entry ban, effective immediately after the New Year, " he said.
The President was speaking at the enactment of a law extending the measures to help AIDS patients to ensure treatment including the poorest. The text was adopted by Congress this month.
According to the American Association Immigration Equality, eleven other countries in the world repress students, tourists, travelers and immigrants infected with the AIDS virus. These are Armenia, Brunei, Iraq, Libya, Moldova, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Sudan.
